London, Sept 24(ANI): A Los Angeles athlete Diana Nyad has begun a second attempt to set a world record by swimming 103 miles (166km) in the shark-infested waters between Cuba and Florida.
She has embarked on the journey from Havana to the US at 18:00 local time (22:00 GMT) on September 23,to break her own record for open-water swimming without a shark cage.
Nyad, 62,would use equipment that creates an electric current to drive away sharks.
Her first attempt to set a world record was thwarted, as she suffered an asthma attack during her journey, the BBC reports. The asthma took me down, but ironically enough, that 29-hour swim was like a very, very expensive training swim," Nyad said.
"I'm in better shape than before. I'm more prepared than ever," she added.
She described the August world record attempt as a mere unplanned dress rehearsal.
She said she hopes that her record-setting swim would inspire the aged to lead an active life, and foster a better understanding between the US and Cuba.(ANI)
