Washington, Sept 24 (ANI): US actor Sean Penn flew to Venezuela to encourage President Hugo Chavez to talk to Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about freeing the two Americans who were held in Iran's notorious Evin Prison on charges of espionage.
Venezuela's deputy foreign minister said that Chavez brought up the case with his Iranian ally Ahmadinejad after being alerted to the Americans' plight by friends in US 'intellectual circles.'
According to a source, 'the American 'intellectual' who took up the case with him was Sean Penn'.
"Penn was very committed to the case, He flew to Caracas several months ago to raise it with Chavez and he kept on it," the Daily Mail quoted the source, as saying.
Penn's spokesman in the United States confirmed this account.
The recently released two Americans were in Iranian custody since their arrest in July 2009 on the border with Iraq, where they said they were hiking. (ANI)
