Pak women parliamentarians to lobby for domestic violence bill

Peshawar, Sept 23(ANI): Women activists and legislators have agreed to araft of Pakistan's 2011 Domestic Violence Bill.

 

They have agreed that the domestic violence bill should be tabled soon in the National assembly and called on every woman parliamentarian to lobby for its passage.

 

Provincial Minister for Women Development Sitara Ayaz expressed hope that the bill would be tabled in the provincial assembly after review in the next session.

 

Acccording to the Dawn, the 2009 draft had lapsed in parliament, as male senators had argued that women were not only victims but also perpetrators of domestic violence.

 

The new draft empowers family courts of first class magistrates to try domestic violence cases.

 

Maliha Zia, a lawyer, said the draft of the proposed law covers acts such as assault, attempt to commit offense, criminal force, intimidation, wrongful confinement, hurt, mischief, trespass or forced entry into aggrieved person's residence, harassment, physical abuse, stalking, sexual, emotional, psychological and verbal abuse, willful or negligent abandonment and economic abuse.

 

Pakistan's National Commission on Status of Women Chairperson Anees Haroon stressed on the need of a legislation as two women were abused per hour in Pakistan. (ANI)
