China urges US to annul arms sales plan to Taiwan

New York , Fri, 23 Sep 2011 ANI

New York, Sept 23(ANI): Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi has urged the United States to annul the arms sales plan to Taiwan to safeguard Sino-US ties and maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits.

Jiechi was addressing the National Committee members on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly debate.

He called on the US to give due regard to China's stance, as it affects the sentiments of 1.3 billion Chinese people, the Xinhua news agency reports.

He also urged the US to cease its military links with Taiwan.

"We should cherish our cooperation, as it embodies the important common interests of our two countries. When it comes to major issues concerning China's sovereignty, security and development interests, the United States should handle them with extreme care so as to prevent interference and setbacks in China-US relations," Jiechi said.

Washington had earlier announced a new 5.852 billion dollar arms package to Taiwan, which includes the " upgrading" of F-16A/B fighter jets.

The US' decision of arms sales to Taiwan threatens China's security and adversely affects the Sino-US ties, Jiechi added.

"This has gravely violated the principles of the three Sino-US joint communiques, particularly the August 17 Communique, grossly interfered in China's internal affairs and seriously undermined China's security, its endeavor to achieve peaceful reunification and China-US relations," he said.

"It runs counter to the serious commitment made by the US side itself. China is firmly opposed to this decision," he added. (ANI)
