London, Sept 20 (ANI): The family of the murdered British schoolgirl Milly Dowler, who became the victim of the now-defunct tabloid News of the World's phone hacking, will be paid three million pounds damages by the News International.
According to the Telegraph, chairman of News International James Murdoch, has personally approved the offer as the company tries to rebuild its reputation following the phone-hacking scandal that rocked the media company.
Sources have revealed that the Dowlers rejected an initial offer of one million pounds to the Dowler family and a further one million pounds to a charity in memory of Milly, and that the final sum would now be three million pounds, of which two million pounds will go to the family.
The settlement is three times the biggest payout to any other victim of phone hacking, but reflects the gravity of the actions of News of the World journalists in accessing the murder victim's voicemails, the paper said.
The 13-year-old was still being treated as a missing person when the News of the World arranged for her messages to be intercepted in 2002.
According to a report, some messages were even deleted to make room for more voicemails, giving the family false hope that Milly was still alive.
Rupert Murdoch, earlier, personally met the Dowler family to make an apology to them. (ANI)
