Beijing, Sept 20(ANI): Chinese authorities have banned a talent show, Super Girl, in a crackdown on unethical television programming.
China's State Administration of Film, Television and Radio (SARFT) reportedly banned Super Girl, which had at least 400 million viewers, for overrunning its time slot.
According to Chinese media reports, the government is concerned at the democratic element of the show, which allowed viewers to vote for their favourite contestant.
A television station spokesperson said it would cancel 'Super Girl' from next year onwards and instead replace the programme with "shows that promote moral ethics and public safety, and provide practical information for housework".
Observers said SARFT is likely to initiate a new "anti-vulgarity" campaign for television programmes, the Telegraph reports.
"So far, no specific rules and regulations have been published, and we are not sure when they will come out, but SARFT has been planning a new attempt at cleaning up television for the past five months," Tsinghua university's Journalism Professor Yin Hong said.
"The 'voluntary' cancellation of Super Girl is just the first example. There will be more to come. Local television stations are supposed to restructure and make adjustments," he added.
SARFT also suspended Shijiazhuang Television's movie channel for airing a talk show in which a "son treated his father disrespectfully, at one point berating him and threatening to take him to court over money".
SARFT declared that the programme had "magnified distorted ethics and moral values" and "caused extremely negative social effects".
"The government is trying to push back on excessive entertainment. They want to increase news programmes and will ask stations to broadcast an extra bulletin each evening," China's Communications University Professor Yuan Fang said.
"At the moment, whenever you turn on the television, there is only entertainment shows. This will be a long-term project," he added. (ANI)
