London, Sept 16(ANI): The Defence and Security Equipment international (DSEi) has permanently shut down the Pakistan Ordnance Factory (POF) stand and Pakistan's Defence Export Promotion Organisation Pavilion at the London arms fair for distributing promotional material containing references to 'banned' cluster bombs.
The promotional material found at both places "contained references to equipment, which after close examination, was found to breach UK Government Export Controls and our own contractual requirements," the DSEi said in a statement.
The British Government fully supports the decision by DSEi to close the stand and the Pavilion, it stated, adding that it is currently investigating how this breach of DSEi's compliance system occurred.
The Pakistani arms companies were found distributing brochures bearing advertisement for banned cluster bombs at the expo, The Express Tribune reported.
Brochures obtained from the Pakistan Government companies clearly list cluster munitions, including 155mm artillery ammunition containing 88 sub-munitions (weapons having an area of effect damage), it added.
The objections were raised by a British Member of Parliament, Caroline Lucas, the report said.
She also pointed out to the double standard of the exhibitors who were simultaneously holding a conference on cluster bombs, the "Second Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions" in Lebanon, which seeks to eliminate the usage of cluster munitions. (ANI)
