Australia a nation of 'fat' and 'sad' boozers: Survey

Canberra , Wed, 14 Sep 2011 ANI

Canberra, Sept 14 (ANI): Most Australians are in denial about their 'expanding' waistlines and are found to be the most unhappiest in the world, a study has claimed.

A survey by health insurer BUPA, covering13,000 people from 12 countries, also revealed that Australians were among the world's biggest drinkers, coming in just behind Britain.

Around one-third of the 1200 Australians surveyed admitted being too fat, BMI (body mass index) measurements revealed their perception was far from reality with 60 per cent actually overweight.

The BMI results have palced Australia in equal third place with Britain, just behind the US and Saudi Arabia where nearly two-thirds of people were overweight, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The survey also revealed that three-quarters said they drank alcohol, where 84 percent enjoyed a tipple, and just over a quarter ate the recommended five serves of fruit and vegetables a day.

Head of BUPA's medical services, Bert Boffa, said Australians might not realize they needed to lose weight because they had become used to seeing more overweight people.

According to the survey Australians are not only struggling with 'bulging body' but also with depression.

One-fifth of the Australians surveyed said they suffered from depression, the highest result for any country. (ANI)
