Melbourne, Sep 14(ANI): Indian-origin twin boys Kamal and Nayan Pothireddy, who each weighed little over 500 grams at birth, have overcome incredible odds to become the youngest premature twins to survive in Australia.
According to the Herald Sun, the twins were born on December 25 last year just 23 weeks and three days into their mother's pregnancy.
Their mother Samy Pothireddy said that doctors at the Royal Women's Hospital in Victoria had told her and her husband that the boys had just a 0.1 per cent chance of surviving their birth.
"I was initially told I'd have to go into labour that day, and the babies had a zero chance of surviving ... the cut-off for twins to survive was 25 weeks," Samy said.
After delivery, the boys were taken to the neonatal intensive care unit, where they hovered between life and death for their first six weeks.
Samy also said that initially the twins' under-formed lungs were unable to work and they relied on ventilators.
"It was touch and go ... every second day, they pulled their ventilator tubes out, or they forgot to breathe ... so every day was very anxious," she said.
Nayan and Kamal were finally discharged on May 6, 131 days after their birth, and since then, they have gone from strength to strength and are now thriving.
"They are tough boys. Even the doctors were saying they are just two little fighters," Samy said. (ANI)
