Beijing, Sept 9 (ANI): A drought has left over 12.6 million people short of drinking water in China's southwestern region.
China apex drought-relief authority, State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said the drought has parched about 6.24 million hectares of farmland, Xinhua reports.
The drought, which has severely hit Guizhou, Yunnan and Sichuan, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and Chongqing Municipality, has caused water shortage for 14.54 million people.
China's Minister of Water Resources Chen Lei ordered local bureaus to devise plans for resolving the drinking water problem and intensify drought-combating efforts.
China's meteorological authorities have issued moderate rain forecasts for drought-hit regions over the next three days.
The Civil Affairs Ministry also ordered local authorities to step up relief funds, and gauge the exact magnitude of food and drinking water shortage.(ANI)
