Beijing, Sept 8 (ANI): China has repeated its objections to US arms sales to Taiwan amid reports that the Obama ministration is considering new deals with the island.
Insisting that the issue is a matter of principle, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman urged Washington to abide by the three Sino-US joint communiques, in which the US is committed to limiting its sales of arms to Taiwan. The Obama administration is due to make a decision on the deal by October the 1st, Xinhua reports.
"We are resolutely against the United States selling arms to Taiwan. We urge the US to respect the principles of the three China-US communiques, especially the August 17th communique, to fully realize the harmfulness and sensitivity of arms sales to Taiwan, and to stop selling arms to Taiwan in order to avoid hurting the peaceful development of China-US relations and cross-Strait relations," Jiang Yu, Spokeswoman of Chinese Foreign Ministry, said.
In January this year, Chinese Defence Minister Liang Guanglie had said that opposing United States' arms sales to Taiwan has always been his country's policy, adding that America's arms sales to Taiwan "have jeopardized China's core interests.
In June, the US held back arms sales to Taiwan due to effective lobbying from the Chinese mainland.
"Arms sales are on hold until at least the spring of 2011, Taiwan is still waiting for upgrades to its F-16A/B planes, and its request for 66 F-16C/D fighter aircraft has been on hold since 2006," Rupert Hammond Chambers, President of the US-Taiwan Business Council, had said. (ANI)
