Washington, Sept 7 (ANI): The White House has denied media reports that the Obama administration has decided to drop the number of American troops in Iraq to 3,000 by the end of the year.
On Tuesday, Fox News had quoted a sources "familiar with the inner workings and decision on U.S. troops movements in Iraq," as saying that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta had already approved the proposed troop reduction and timeline, and that some senior commanders were "livid" about the decision.
White House press secretary Jay Carney, however, denied such reports.
"We want a normal, productive, healthy relationship with Iraq. If the Iraqi government makes a request of us, we will certainly consider it," Politico quoted Carney, as saying.
However, he added that the two countries are continuing to operate "under existing agreements" for the time being.
On being asked whether budgetary concerns are a part of President Obama's considerations on how many military personnel will stay in Iraq, Carney said: "We live in a world ... where resources aren't finite." (ANI)
