Beijing, Sept 7(ANI): China promises to tighten the procedure for selling weapons to other countries after it was revealed that state-owned arms manufacturers negotiated weapons sales with Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's government during the ongoing Libyan conflict.
China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said the Chinese Government would "further strengthen management over military exports. Competent authorities for military trade will handle the matter in a serious manner in accordance with regulations."
Yu said China would continue obeying an embargo imposed by United Nations on weapons sales to Libya.
The Libyan rebels, who now control Tripoli, have alleged that Chinese companies supplied weapons to Gaddafi forces.
They also claimed that they had evidence indicating that Chinese companies supplied arms to Libya despite the embargo, and vowed to retaliate if arms sales to Gaddafi's forces were proved.
China countered the allegation by saying that the negotiations took place without the government's knowledge and that no arms were supplied.
The documents found in Tripoli trash heap also referred to the 200 million dollar arms deal.
However, the papers gave no indication that any of the proposed deals with three Chinese companies was carried out, the New York Times reports.
Yu also said China supports the council though it is yet to formally recognize it.
"Our lines of communication with the N.T.C. are smooth," she said, adding that China would recognize the Libyan interim government "when conditions are ripe."(ANI)
