New York, Sep 6(ANI): The United Nations (UN) has warned that upto 750,000 deaths can occur from famine in East Africa over the next four months without food aid.
It said at least 12 million people across East Africa, including four million in Somalia alone, are in need of food aid, the Daily Mail reports.
Somalia's top humanitarian official said securing aid to reduce starving is a 'race against time'.
Somalia has been hit hardest by famine due to the civil war, and presence of Islamist insurgents that have banned many aid agencies, including the UN's World Food Program, in their territory.
The UN official incharge of Somalia aid, Mark Bowden said the four million Somalis needed aid, which amounted to over half of the country's population.
Famine has now affected six areas, including four southern Somali regions and two settlements of refugees.
Bowden said access to southern areas held by the al-Shabab insurgent militia was improving, enabling some aid agencies to work in the region.
However the UN food agency is still unable to reach out to about 1.9million people.
But UN Spokeswoman Challiss McDonough said the organization is encouraging donors to fund other agencies who had access to southern areas.(ANI)
