Lahore, Sep 5(ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has expressed confidence in country's law enforcement agencies and promised to take unbiased action against those found involved in anti-state activities.
Gilani said he has directed law enforcement agencies to take action on credible intelligence to minimize damage in the wake of increasing violence in the country.
"I am confident the law enforcement agencies will not resort to any action which is not in the interest of Pakistan," Gilani said.
He said Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik had called for a judicial commission under the chairmanship of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to probe into the charges levelled against him by former Sindh home minister Zulfiqar Mirza.
Gilani clarified that no action would be taken against Mirza as he had made a principled decision to resign from office.
"People level charges while staying in the party while Mirza first resigned," he said, adding that Zulfiqar Mirza was a committed stalwart and would not create a new party.
Gilani also informed that the Pakistan People's Party would convince the other parliamentary parties, including the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), to hold local government elections prior to the next general election.
He hinted that the country's general elections could be held anytime after April 2012, the Daily Times reports.
He ruled out the possibility of mid-term election, pointing out that provinces had admitted that the environment was not conducive for conducting even a by-election.
He said PPP's priority was to conduct free, fair and transparent elections in the country and thus it always advocated an independent Election Commission.(ANI)
