London, Sep 5(ANI): Cambridge University continues to hold the top ranking in an international university league table, after ending Harvard's six-year lead ranking last year.
The rankings, prepared by QS firm, were based on factors including reputation, graduate employability, research and staff-student ratios.
The table showed US institutions leading overall rankings, the BBC reports.
Three UK universities commanded top ten positions. Oxford's ranking rose to the fifth spot, while Imperial College climbed to sixth ranking, while University College of London dropped from fourth to seventh place.
Altogether, 31 UK institutions were in the top 200 rankings, but the number in the top 100 dropped from 19 to 18.
QS research head Ben Sowter described the largely unchanged picture in the rankings as 'welcome news' taking into account the debate over raised tuition fees and cuts to teaching and research budgets.
He warned redundancies and increased student intake were already affecting UK universities' rankings on the parameter of staff-student ratios.
Sowter said it was "inevitable" that financial pressures would adversely affect UK universities' rankings in future in terms of staffing, research productivity and influence.
UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said the country's universities' global reputation was "well deserved".
"Our reforms will put students at the heart of the system, allowing popular universities to expand and putting the sector on a sustainable financial footing. We expect total funding for UK universities to grow by around 10% by 2014-15," he said.
