Washington, Sept 3 (ANI): Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords made her second trip home to Tucson on Friday, nearly eight months after a gunman shot her in the head during an event with constituents outside a local supermarket.
Giffords had reportedly returned to Tucson for the first time over the Father's Day weekend.
The third-term Arizona Democrat, who also traveled to Washington in August to cast a vote to raise the debt ceiling, has been receiving outpatient treatment in Houston following a long period of inpatient rehabilitation at that city's TIRR Memorial Hermann hospital, Politico reports.
A statement released by her office has said that Giffords and her husband, Navy Captain Mark Kelly, decided to spend the Labor Day weekend with family and friends in Arizona.
"The congresswoman misses Tucson very much. This weekend will be a welcome respite from her rigorous schedule of therapy. It will be good for her to again be in the desert that she loves," Pia Carusone, chief of staff for Giffords, said.
However, Giffords is not expected to make any public appearances.
She was shot in a January 8 rampage, in which six people, including one of her aides, were killed. Doctors performed a brain surgery on her at the University of Arizona's medical center in Tucson, and she was flown to Houston about two weeks later. (ANI)
