'Agents' dupe Malay- Indian retirees of provident fund savings, citizenship

Kuala Kumpur, Sat, 03 Sep 2011 ANI

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 3(ANI): 'Agents' have duped many retired Malay- Indians of their Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings and citizenship by telling them that they could only withdraw their EPF savings by giving up their citizenship.

Malaysia's Special Implementation Task Force for Indians' National Coordinator N. Siva Subramaniam said lack of education among the victims was responsible for the incident.

Subramaniam said 'agents' had cheated the victims by taking money to help them surrender their citizenship.

"However, in the end, those conned would receive nothing. They were so ignorant that they did not know that such a procedure did not exist," he said.

Subramaniam further said many Malay- Indians failed to understand the importance of possessing their identification documents.

"This is the main problem we faced during the last exercise by the Government to register those Indians without birth certificates or MyKads. This needs to change," he said, pointing out that there were estimated 10,000 Indians without birth certificates or MyKads.

Subramaniam stressed on the need for Malay- Indian community to be more aware of the current programmes and policies devised for their welfare, the Star reports.

"Community leaders need to educate the people, especially the elderly, on the importance of getting these documents because without them, they will lose out on healthcare benefits and welfare aid," he said.

Subramaniam said the second round of registration for Malay-Indians would start on September 15, focusing on four states - Selangor, Perak, Kedah and Johor.

He urged those people who facing problems in obtaining their identification document to submit their names to any Malaysian Indian Congress representative or contact the National Registration Department. (ANI)
