Beijing, Sep 1(ANI): China's Ministry of National Defense has said the modernization of country's armed forces will not alter the nation's defensive policy, and that the country's naval strategy will remain based on offshore defense.
The statement came in the wake of China's first refitted aircraft carrier succeeding in a maiden sea trial.
The recent United States' report on China's military development had said the country was increasing naval power and extending the reach of high-tech weaponry beyond the Pacific.
China's Foreign Ministry of Defence spokesperson Yang Yujun clarified that the development of the country's armed forces does not target any country or specific object, and that it is only to aimed maintain national security.
The annual Pentagon report had described China's new advanced rocket systems a "deterrent" against India and said the "mistrust" between both sides is leading to continued tension.
"The conclusion is totally groundless. China and India are not enemies, not opponents, but neighbors and partners", the China Daily quoted Yujun as saying.
"In the past few years the two sides have been committed to developing a strategic partnership. And a wide range of exchange programs between the two sides have resulted in enhanced mutual understanding and mutual trust," he added.
Yujun also expressed China's concern over the Japan's plan to deploy surveillance troops on prefecture of Okinawa, and to send self-defense troops to some nearby islands. The Japanese side should explain its real intentions behind its military buildup on those islands," he said. (ANI)
