Tripoli, Aug 31 (ANI): As Colonel Gaddafi's regime faced its downfall a week after the rebels' victory following the uprising in the country, Libya arrears to be divided over the leadership now.
The fighters from Misurata guard the central bank, the port and the prime minister's office, where their graffiti has relabeled the historic plaza "Misurata Square," while the mountain town Yafran has been taken charge by some other group, the New York Times reports.
As rebels broke Gaddafi's former stronghold, much of its territory remains divided, with reports saying that each one is now being controlled by quasi-independent brigades representing different geographic areas of the country.
The act of using spray paint to mark their territory in Tripoli indicates the weakening leadership in the country.
The top civilian officials of the Libyan rebels' Transitional National Council, now styling itself a provisional government to be based in the capital, are yet to arrive, citing personal safety concerns even as they pronounce the city fully secure, the paper said.
Reports suggest that there are growing hints of rivalry among the various brigades over who deserves credit for liberating the city and the influence it might bring. Besides, attempts to name a military leader to unify the bands of fighters have instead exposed divisions within the rebel leadership, not only along regional lines but also between secularists and Islamists, it added.
An influential member of the council said that these are all signs that indicate that there is a "power vacuum" in the civilian leadership in Tripoli.
After Abdel Hakim al-Hasadi, also known as AbdelHakim Belhaj, was named commander of a newly formed Tripoli Military Council, several liberals among the rebel leadership council secretly complained that Hasadi was a leader of the disbanded Libyan Islamist Fighting Group that rebelled against Colonel Qaddafi in the 1990s. Some expressed fear that it was the first step in an attempt at an Islamist takeover.
Gaddafi's whereabouts are currently not known, but reports had emerged yesterday that his family had been smuggled into Algeria. (ANI)
