London, Aug 30 (ANI): A new Russian reality TV show has sparked fury among the community and critics, for promoting the idea that people from the former USSR are trashy, money-obsessed drunks.
'Russian Dolls', dubbed the Russian version of MTV's 'Jersey Shore', is sold as a glimpse into the lives of eight characters from New York's Brighton Beach neighbourhood, which is popular with the Russian emigre community.
TV critics, with Richard Huff from the New York Daily News described the show as "pure torture" and "appalling".
The show has left many unimpressed - both for its vacuous content and the impression it gives of the Russian community.
Speaking to The Sunday Times, Vyacheslav Igrunov, a Moscow-based political commentator, said it was "utterly misleading and smutty".
"When you watch this show you'd think that all Russians are prostitutes and criminals," the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.
"The show depicts them as a bunch of lazy good-for-nothings, and nothing could be further from the truth," he added. (ANI)
