Beijing, Aug 30(ANI): A new judicial interpretation issued jointly by the China's Supreme People's Court and Supreme People's Procuratorate has said hackers who break into 20 or more computers will face jail terms of upto seven years.
The interpretation also said people who hack from 20 to 100 computers or steal from 10 to 50 user names and passwords for online-payment or stock accounts, would get at least three years in prison.
Those convicted for hacking more computers or stealing more passwords will face jail terms of upto seven years.
National People's Congress's law committee member Zhou Guangquan said the latest interpretation also applies to hackers who steal information from foreign computers.
A Supreme People's Court's research department official, requesting anonymity, said the judicial interpretation aimed to set specific penalties for online crimes, attempt to combat computer viruses and target increasing number of hacking cases in China.
According to China's Ministry of Public Security, the number of computer viruses has increased by 80 percent last year, and eight out of 10 computers that are connected to the Internet have been hacked during the past five years.
A Beijing lawyer specializing in criminal regulations, Tang Hongxin welcomed the interpretation as it "brings more practical conveniences for lawyers and judges".
"It will be very helpful for me to be able to plead for the accused in accordance with the new and specific interpretation. Meanwhile, judges and prosecuting authorities can also hand down sentences in accordance with it", the China Daily quoted Hongxin, as saying.
However, other experts declined that the new law would effectively curb hacking. A network security official Liu Qing said the interpretation would do much to combat hacking. (ANI)
