Singapore, Aug 28 (ANI): Singapore's former Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan has won the election to become the country' s seventh President.
Tan will be sworn in on September 1 for a six- year term.
He thanked his support team and the social media supporters, after winning the election.
"The president is a president for all Singaporeans. Not only for those who have voted for me, but also even for those who have not voted for me. I pledge to work for each and every one of you," Xinhua quoted Tan, as saying.
He was elected President after recounting of votes as initial results showed that the two candidates finished very close in the race.
Tan, 71, secured 35.19 percent of the total votes in the close election chase of four candidates.
A former lawmaker, Tan Cheng Bock, finished second, commanding 34.85 percent of the valid votes.
Singapore's President is the ceremonial head vested with custodial powers on the state reserves and also possesses veto powers on certain key appointments. (ANI)
