London, Aug 27(ANI): The European Convention on Human Rights treaty has helped killers, rapists and terror suspects to fight for their causes and escape prosecution, according to a British daily.
The ECHR, enforced by the Strasbourg European Court of Human Rights under the auspices of the Council of Europe, was set up in 1949.
Its precedents allow suspected criminals to apply for bail under human rights laws.
The ECHR allowed notorious hate preacher Abu Hamza to escape extradition to the United States on terror charges, after he claimed it would breach his human rights.
Fowzi Nejad, who laid siege to Iranian Embassy in 1980, is unlikely to be deported from Britain after serving a life sentence on human rights grounds.
The 2009 ECHR verdict led to awarding of 75,000 pounds to terror suspect Abu Qatada and eight others for a "breach" of their human rights, Express.co.uk reports.
The commission said the British Government's decision to imprison them without trial following the 9/11 attacks, violated their right to liberty and security.
The ECHR also enabled rapists and pedophiles to appeal against having their detail permanently on the sex offenders register.
Britain's compensation culture has also received a fillip due to ECHR verdicts.
A prisoner Robert Napier received 2,400 pounds because he was made to slop out his prison cell. The incident prompted similar claims by several prisoners. (ANI)
