Ottawa, Aug 27(ANI): Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper has sent a signal to China that his country will not relinquish its sovereignty over the portions of the Arctic lying within its territory.
China feels entitled to a share of the Arctic's natural resource wealth and wants to see as much of the Arctic as possible remains international territory.
Harper, however, said that the vast areas of land and significant territorial waters within the Arctic are under the sovereignty of various countries, including Canada.
"The government of Canada, working with our partners and the people in this region, intend to assert our sovereignty in these regions," the Globe and Mail quoted Harper, as saying.
"We also are working co-operatively with other nations through the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to establish various extended claims through the Arctic continental shelf and that work continues peacefully," he added. (ANI)
