London, August 25 (ANI): Close to one million youth across Britain have been classified as 'NEETS', who are not taking education, employment or training, new figures released by Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) have revealed.
Experts say that records have taken a dive in the last one year with 979,000 youngsters between the ages of 16 to 24, languishing on benefits.
The figure is up by up by 107,000 in the last one year. The number of 16 to 18-year-old NEETS dipped slightly as more stayed on at school or college, The Sun reports.
But, policy watchers are horrified at massive increases in 19 to 24-year-olds. There are now 794,000 NEETS in this age group, up by 119,000 or 18 per cent in a single year.
The situation is worse in the North West, where one in four 19 to 24-year-olds or 141,000 young men and women have been classified as NEETS.
"These figures confirm that the Government is not doing enough to support young people. While the planned expansion of apprenticeships is welcome, it is clearly not enough," IPPR associate director, Dalia Ben-Galim was quoted, as saying.
The government has, however, confirmed that they are taking all suitable action to restore some stability in the sector.
"We are taking action to get our young people into work, helping restore a sense of responsibility and pride in our communities," Education minister John Hayes said.(ANI)
