Pak lawmaker calls for Anna Hazare-style campaign in violence-stricken Karachi

Karachi, Mon, 22 Aug 2011 ANI

Karachi, Aug 22(ANI): Former Pakistan Railways Minister Shaikh Rasheed Ahmad has urged the people of Karachi to stand up like veteran Indian social activist Anna Hazare against the present political system in the city.

Misgovernance and corruption have been blamed for the ongoing bloodbath in Karachi.

Officials claim that the killings appear to be linked to ongoing rivalries between three political parties vying for power- the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the Awami National Party (ANP) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

Though the PPP views Karachi as a crucial political battleground, politics in Karachi is dominated by the MQM.

The ANP is a secular Pashtun party based in northwest Pakistan, whose supporters have migrated to Karachi due to the ongoing violence in their home region.

Analysts said the lack of law enforcement has allowed supporters of political parties to adopt a gang-like mentality, the CNN reports.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, over 1,000 people have been killed this year in Karachi. (ANI)
