London, Aug 18 (ANI): The United Nations human rights chief is likely to tell the Security Council that the International war crimes court should investigate Syria's violent crackdown on pro-democracy protestors, diplomatic sources have revealed.
The 15-nation council is set to meet on the Syria crisis amid growing concern over President Bashar al-Assad's crackdown, which has killed nearly 2,000 people in five months, the Telegraph reports.
UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay and emergency relief coordinator Valerie Amos will give details of latest events.
According to a diplomatic source, Pillay's report will say there is "evidence that Syria has committed grave violations of international human rights law."
The UN official "is likely to suggest that the International Criminal Court would be appropriate," the paper quoted another diplomatic source, as saying.
The UN human rights department "is expected to conclude that the allegations are so serious, and credible, that national level investigation conducted by the Syrians will be insufficient," added the source. nly the Security Council can refer the Syria case to the ICC based in The Hague. (ANI)
