Sydney, August 16 (ANI): The Federal Bureau of Investigation has arrested a 50-year-old man in the United States over allegations that he had strapped a fake bomb around the neck of a schoolgirl in Sydney, Australia.
The FBI arrested Paul 'Doug' Peters in a joint operation with New South Wales Police from the suburb of Louisville, Kentucky.
In an incident that made headlines around the world, Madeleine Pulver spent ten hours trapped in the fake bomb after, she was attacked by a man wearing a ski mask, who entered her Sydney home as she studied for school exams on August 3.
Madeleine's father, Bill Pulver, is chief executive of a linguistic software company and one of Sydney's wealthiest men.
NSW Police Assistant Commissioner, Dave Hudson, said the man was 'surprised' when he was arrested and will appear in Louisville court, News.com.au reports.
"He had been in Sydney for six weeks prior to the incident. His primary place of residence has been in Sydney. There are some links between the suspect and the family. However, no direct links and that's still a matter for investigation," Hudson was quoted, as saying.
Police said the extortion letter left at the scene was still being examined by the experts.
A two-page note attached to the fake bomb made no demands for money, yet said any attempt to call police or defuse the bomb would result in its detonation.
Madeleine's father, Bill Pulver, said he hoped the arrest marked the beginning of the end of his family's traumatic ordeal. (ANI)
