Pak moves International Court of Arbitration to halt India's Kishenganga project

Islamabad, Mon, 15 Aug 2011 ANI

Islamabad, Aug 15(ANI): Pakistan has moved the International Court of Arbitration to ask India to halt construction of the Kishenganga project.

Pakistan envoy Kamal Majiullah will lead a delegation in the ongoing legal battle against India on the project.

The delegation would first call on foreign lawyers hired by Pakistan, in London between August 21and 23.

The Pakistani delegation will reach The Hague on August 24.

"Pakistan's legal team would present its case seeking the stay on ongoing construction work on the controversial project till the final verdict of the court", the News quoted Water and Power top official, as saying

Pakistan has been objecting to the construction of the Kishanganga hydropower project on the Ganga River in Kashmir, which is called the Neelum upon entering Pakistan, saying that it will reduce the capacity of the 969 MW Neelum-Jhelum power project by 16 per cent.

The Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) inked between India and Pakistan in 1960, provides appointment of a neutral expert by the World Bank as a last option to resolve water related issues between both the countries.

All members of Court of Arbitration have already visited the Neelum- Jhelum project in Pakistan and Kishenganga project in India in June to assess as to how much construction work has been completed. (ANI)
