Obama's 2012 strongest rival Rick Perry wore undies made by mum

Washington, Aug 15 (ANI): Texas Republican Governor Rick Perry, who doesn't shy away from admitting that he wore underwear made his mom during his college days, has emerged as the strongest challenger to Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential poll.

Often described as an "evangelical Christian", Perry is also a fiscal conservative who turned down more than half-a-billion of Obama's GFC stimulus money for his state's unemployed, news.com.au reports.

Reports suggest that he considered becoming a commercial pilot in order to save his family's farm in 1978, but the rains came at the last minute and he entered politics instead.

Perry, who holds the record of not losing any election so far, had admitted last year that his mother was an excellent seamstress who made all the family's clothes, except for jeans.

"When I went to college, mother still made my underwear," he said.

He has presided over more executions than any other governor. His tally of 232 people far surpasses former president George W. Bush's previous record of 152, when he was governor.

The most controversial execution in Perry's time as governor was that of Cameron Todd Willingham in 2004, who was convicted of murdering his three young girls by arson in 1992. He was executed in 2004, but in 2009 an investigative report found a case of arson couldn't be sustained.

Perry announced his candidacy in South Carolina on Saturday, and emphasised on his economic credentials and Texas' job growth, his conservative stances on social issues and his faith while addressing people there. (ANI)
