Islamabad, August 13(ANI): Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik has blamed 'anti-state elements' active in the country's tribal areas on the western borders for fuelling the Karachi unrest.
"There is definitely a connection between our western borders and the Karachi unrest," Malik said while winding up the National Assembly debate on the law and order situation, with particular reference to Karachi and Balochistan.
He said that the enemies present in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and border areas were also fuelling the Karachi unrest.
"The anti-state elements rooted out from Malakand, Fata and Swat also have connections in Karachi and they are conspiring to cripple the country's jugular vein and economic hub," The News quoted Malik, as saying.
Calling upon all political parties to join hands and assist the government in foiling conspiracies being hatched to destabilise the country, the minister said that while differences of opinion and positive criticism were the essence of democracy, one should not indulge in blame games on the serious issue.
Malik said that 90 target killers were arrested this year from different areas of the city, and referring to the lacunae in the existing laws, he urged the House to approve the Anti-Terrorist Act immediately to award exemplary punishment to the culprits of violence.
He also demanded the formation of a parliamentary committee with representation from all political parties to bring all facts regarding target killers, drug mafia and extortionists before the House, saying that these elements were actively playing with the law in Karachi and that collective efforts were needed to launch crackdown on them.
