Washington, Aug 13(ANI): A rare, 43-carat yellow diamond, 'Golden Eye', is expected to fetch millions of dollars at an auction next month.
The United States Marshals Service will put the diamond up for online auction on September 6 with the bids starting at 900,000 dollars.
The Department of Justice said the money raised from the auction would help fund law enforcement and community programmes.
"This precious gem is sure to generate interest worldwide", the Telegraph quoted US Marshal Pete Elliott, as saying
The diamond was seized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in an undercover operation that led to the conviction of a businessman Paul Monea on money laundering charges.
It is currently kept at a federal building in Cleveland in Ohio.
According to court documents, Monea had earlier tried to sell the diamond, along with his house in Ohio, to an undercover FBI agent for 19.5 million dollars and a boat.
The home had earlier been the estate of boxer Mike Tyson. hough the diamond originated in South Africa, it was unclear how Monea took it in his possession.
He allegedly said that he owned a diamond mine in Africa and received it from his friend. (ANI)
