Beijing, Aug 11(ANI): China has suspended all new high-speed railway projects following the July 23 train accident, which killed about 40 people.
The accident took place when two bullet trains collided in Zhejiang province on July 23.
The move announced by China's State Council came in response to a public backlash against the government's handling of the aftermath of the crash and revelations of corruption in the country's railways ministry.
"We will suspend for the time being the examination and approval of new railway construction projects," The Telegraph quoted a State Council statement, as saying.
The statement also said that the government will now "thoroughly study" projects currently awaiting approval.
China has the world's biggest high-speed rail network at 8,358 kilometres by the end of 2010.
It had also claimed that the network would exceed 13,000 kilometres by 2012 and 16,000 kilometres by 2020.
Earlier, in December 2010, the Railways Ministry had announced that a high-speed train had reached a speed of 486 km/h, smashing the world record for an unmodified train. (ANI)
