Islamabad, August 10(ANI): Seven suspected Haqqani network militants have been killed in a suspected US drone strike in Pakistan's tribal region bordering Afghanistan, according to Pakistani intelligence officials.
Two Pakistani intelligence officials told CNN on the condition of anonymity that two missiles were fired on a militant hideout in the Gora Qabristan area of North Waziristan, one of the seven districts of Pakistan's volatile tribal region along the border.
The officials said that the militants belonged to the Haqqani network, a pro-Taliban militant group based in North Waziristan that is accused of planning attacks on the United States and NATO forces inside Afghanistan.
The Pakistan Government and the country's top spy agency, the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), supported the Taliban when it controlled Afghanistan during the 1990s, but the government broke ties with the Taliban after the 9/11 attacks, the report said.
US officials have consistently indicated that there are rogue ISI elements supportive of militants, and have long pushed their Pakistani counterparts to start an operation against the Haqqani network in North Waziristan, but Pakistani officials have said they were already engaged in many areas fighting against militants, it added.
