Bangkok, Aug 5(ANI): Thailand's parliament elected Yingluck Shinawatra as the country's first female Prime Minister on Friday, a month after her party won a landslide victory in the July 3 elections.
Almost 60 percent or 296 of all 500 lawmakers in the House of Representatives voted in Shinawatra's favor. Another 197 members abstained.
"Based on the vote result, Yingluck Shinawatra received more than half of the House seats in favor, making her the (new) prime minister," Xinhua quoted House speaker Somsak Kietsuranon, as saying before he adjourned the House meeting.
The 44-year-old, who started her political career in June, is the sister of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was overthrown in a bloodless 2006 coup and is now living in self-imposed exile.
Before she can assume power, King Bhumibol Adulyadej must endorse her in a separate ceremony, expected within days.
Pheu Thai Party led by Shinawatra had won 265 seats in the general election on July 3. (ANI)
