Fears arise over Mubarak's court absence triggering violence again

Cairo , Tue, 02 Aug 2011 ANI

Cairo, Aug 2 (ANI): As the trail date of embattled Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak comes closer, there are fears that the fallen dictator's failure to appear in court may trigger violence in the country once again.

Mubarak's trial is scheduled to open on Wednesday in a court at Cairo's police academy.

But many observers believe that Mubarak will not appear and that a postponement of the trial will be sought and granted, the Telegraph reports.

There are the questions about Mubarak's health that have so far kept him from any jail or courthouse.

Presently, judicial officials have insisted that he will appear, but doctors at the hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh where Mubarak is being treated for a heart condition have hinted that he may be too ill to appear in the court for his trial.

There are growing fears that if Mubarak fails to appear in court, it could trigger renewed violence in a country that has seemed increasingly unstable since his overthrow, the paper said.

Pro-democracy activists the outcome in which a trial takes place in Mubarak's absence as a 'shabby compromise' meant to protect the military leadership, the paper added.

Meanwhile, the government has promised to broadcast Mubarak's trial.

The trial will also include Mubarak's two sons, Gamal and Alaa, along with former Interior Minister Habib al-Adli, and six other police officials.

Mubarak is charged with a range of offences, the most serious of which is conspiring over the killing of protesters during the uprising that led to his overthrow.

If convicted, he could face the death penalty. (ANI)
