Singapore, July 31 (ANI): A Singapore judge has ordered the caning of British businessman for squeezing a woman's bottom in a nightclub.
Austin Cowburn, a recruitment consultant, was on holiday in Singapore,nd has been accused of pinching a woman's buttocks while partying inhe upmarket Boat Quay area at 4 a.m.
According to the Daily Mail, he is understood to have arrived fromoha, Qatar, where he works as a senior executive for internationalecruitment company NES Global.
Thirty-four-year-old Cowburn was charged on Friday with outraging theodesty of the woman at the China One club on April 3.
At the hearing, a judge set his bail at 4,900 pounds and he is nowtaying in a backpacker hostel in the Chinatown area of the island,aving surrendered his passport to police.
He is due to appear for a pre-trial hearing on August 3 and, ifonvicted, could be jailed for two years, fined up to 6,000 pounds ore sentenced to a lashing with a four foot rattan cane.
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: 'We are aware of therrest of a British national in Singapore. The British High Commissionn Singapore is providing consular assistance.'
Singapore is often criticized for its severe punishments. The sellingr importing chewing gum is punishable with a fine of up to 6,000ounds, littering or spitting can attract a similar fine and there is mandatory death penalty for murder. (ANI)
