Tripoli, July 30 (ANI): NATO has bombed three satellite dishes in Tripoli as the regime of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi continued taunting Britain following the killing of rebel chief, General Abdel Fattah Younes.
Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's spokesman taunted Britain for recognising the National Transitional Council as the "sole governmental authority" in Libya, insisting that the death of NTC chief showed that the rebel movement was untrustworthy and unruly.
Tripoli also termed that killing of Younes as "a nice slap to the face" of the UK and proof the NTC could not rule Libya.
Meanwhile, NATO spokesman Colonel Roland Lavoie has said that the bombing was done to stop the Libyan regime from broadcasting programmes that "systematically oppress and threaten civilians",
"A few hours ago NATO conducted a precision air strike that disabled three ground-based Libyan state TV satellite transmission dishes in Tripoli," The Telegraph quoted Lavoie, as saying.
However, Libyan television reportedly continued to broadcast, and early on Saturday was showing a repeat of a political talk show from the previous evening.
NATO has been bombing Libyan targets since March after intervening under a United Nations mandate to protect civilians from Gaddafi's forces.
"Our intervention was necessary as TV was being used as an integral component of the regime apparatus designed to systematically oppress and threaten civilians and to incite attacks against them," he added.
Several explosions had shaken Tripoli late on Friday evening, after which the state television had claimed that air strikes had hit civilian targets.
Colonel Lavoie said that "striking specifically these critical satellite dishes will reduce the regime's ability to oppress civilians while at the same time preserving television broadcast infrastructure that will be needed after the conflict." (ANI)
