Gilani seeks Pak artists' help to fight terrorism, extremism

Islamabad, July 30 (ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that the country's artists were an asset and the government was seeking their views to help devise a policy to project Pakistan's soft image to the world and fight extremism and terrorism.

 

Speaking at an event "Dialogue with the PM", Gilani said that the artists could help fight terrorism, which he acknowledged as a major threat confronting Pakistan.

 

"All political forces are united to stand at the same platform to launch military operations in Swat and Malakand," the Daily Times quoted Gilani, as saying.

 

Gilani, also directed Pakistan Information Minister Firdaus Aashiq Awan and Cabinet Secretary Nargis Sethi to review and finalize the suggestions that included revival of the National Film Development Corporation and classic music channel on Pakistan Television (PTV), a check on use of Indian content in advertisements, films and dramas, promotion of youth parliament, possibility of setting up of a film studio, industrial status for film and television and theatres all over the country.

 

The meeting also took note of the plight of the artist community, especially those who had retired from the profession.

 

He further said that the Pakistani missions have been directed to make the cultural attaches productive and effective by seeking guidance from artists, writers and intellectuals in promoting national cultural activities abroad.

 

He also assured that measures would be taken to give lifetime achievement awards to artists and writers.

 

The artists vowed to stand by the government in ridding the country of extremism, fighting terrorism and developing staying power of society for making the country prosperous and peaceful. (ANI)
