Taliban make bonfire of 'un Islamic' cloth in South Waziristan

Peshawar, Fri, 29 Jul 2011 ANI

Peshawar, July 29 (ANI): A Taliban group burnt huge quantity of cloth taken from shopkeepers, saying it was un Islamic and too thin to be made into suitably modest garments.

The Islamist extremists stormed into shops in Wana in South Waziristan, and made a bonfire of the cloth in a public area near the bazaar, officials said.

Shopkeeper Rahimullah Khan said that at least eight armed men burst into his premises and took away bundles of raw cloth saying it was too thin to make respectable clothing.

"They said it was un Islamic to wear clothes that don't properly cover the human body," the Dawn quoted Khan, as saying.

A Wana official requesting anonymity, said the perpetrators were local Taliban, adding that shop-owners calculated thousands of metres of material have been destroyed.

Taliban militants in Pakistan have often targeted shops selling music and films that they claim to be violating Islamic moral codes. (ANI)
