Dubai court fines UK woman for calling colleague a 'Bin Laden supporter'

London, July 27 (ANI): A Dubai court has fined a British woman for insulting Islam after she accused her Muslim co-worker of being 'a fan of Osama bin-Laden' on Facebook.

The 31-year-old landed in court on charges of calling her colleague a 'Bin Laden supporter' on the social network site, the Daily Mail reports.

The race-horse trainer, named only as EL in court proceedings, was hauled before a judge last week after the online spat in September 2010.

Her Egyptian ex-colleague accused her of disrespecting 'Islam and Ramadan' when she posted a series of disparaging remarks on Facebook.

According to court documents, the 34-year-old victim, named as MJ, said the British woman branded her a 'dictator' and an 'Ayatollah' when they worked together at a logistics firm.

"Ah, that's better. Ayatollah has been deleted from my friends list. Anyone else a Bin Laden supporter, please raise your hand," read a status update.

"If ignorance is bliss, then I am happy. But my Facebook wall is not a place for your dictatorial religious behaviour," the Brit woman said in another comment.

The court also heard how the Brit woman insulted the Islamic holy festival of Ramadan.

"I hope that depriving yourself of food and water would have an effect on your inner spirit and maybe some day you would be more open-minded," she wrote.

She admitted expressing a dislike of Ramadan but denied insulting Islam.

"I did not insult Islam, I did not call her stupid or close-minded, and I did not say she was a dictator," she said.

"She probably misunderstood what I was telling her," she added.

She was fined 500 pounds in the local court of misdemeanours in Dubai. (ANI)
