Tripoli, July 25 (ANI): Libya's opposition leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil has said Colonel Muammar Gaddafi can stay in the country as part of a political solution if he gives up his power.
Jalil said that Libyan leaders would decide on the conditions under which Gaddafi and his family will be allowed to stay in the country, The Wall Street Journal reports.
"Gaddafi can stay in Libya but it will have conditions. We will decide where he stays and who watches him. The same conditions will apply to his family," Jalil was quoted, as saying.
Jalil appeared to be softening his stand and is now backing up comments made by U.S., Italian and French officials in recent days.
French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said last week that Gaddafi could remain in Libya if he gives up power completely.
The U.S. and Italy have said recently that Gaddafi must be removed from power, but his fate will be decided by the Libyan people, leaving open the possibility that he remain in Libya. (ANI)
