Washington, July 22(ANI): Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States, Husain Haqqani, has thanked a US congressional panel for blocking an amendment to a spending Bill that would have banned any assistance to Pakistan.
Five US lawmakers had voted yes, but 39 others rejected the measure by Republican Representative Dana Rohrabacher, who described aid to Pakistan as "foolishness" at a time when the US is trying to avoid default on its debt.
"We're thankful to the House Foreign Affairs Committee for defeating an amendment to the Foreign Assistance Authorization Bill that would have restricted all US security assistance to Pakistan," the Dawn quoted Haqqani, as saying.
He further said that the US-Pakistan relations face many challenges, stressed that Islamabad is looking forward to addressing the concerns of the US Congress.
"Pakistan still has several hurdles to climb and many misgivings to address before the Congressional process of aid authorization and appropriation is completed," Haqqani said.
US President Barack Obama's administration had recently suspended about one-third of its 2.7 billion dollar annual defence aid to Pakistan.
However, it has assured Islamabad that it is committed to a five-year, 7.5 billion dollar civilian package approved in 2009 that aims to build schools, infrastructure and democratic institutions. (ANI)
