Paris, July 21 (ANI): In an effort to find a diplomatic solution to the Libyan crisis, the French government has said Colonel Muammar Gaddafi could be allowed to stay in his own country if he quits power.
French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe suggested that Gaddafi might have a future in the North African country if he decides ends his political life.
"One of the possibilities being considered is that (Gaddafi) stays in Libya but on the clear condition that he steps aside from Libyan political life," Juppe was quoted, as saying by The Daily Mail. That is what we are waiting for before we start the political process for a ceasefire. The ceasefire comes about by a formal and clear commitment by Gaddafi to give up his civil and military responsibilities," he added.
However, Gadhafi's foreign minister has dismissed the French proposal, saying Gadhafi's departure after 41 years in power was not a matter for discussion.
British and French air force jets continue to attack Gaddafi's forces as part of the NATO operation launched four months ago, but the Gaddafi regime is still unmoved.
The United States has meanwhile reiterated that Gadhafi must quit, but has indicated that Libyan people will decide, whether he remains in Libya or not.after
"He needs to remove himself from power and then it is up to the Libyan people to decide," White House Spokesman Jay Carney said. (ANI)
