Sydney Opera House appears in "Open Source Jihad" section of Al-Qaeda magazine

Canberra, Thu, 21 Jul 2011 ANI

Canberra, July 21 (ANI): The image of Sydney Opera House has appeared in an online English-language magazine on terrorism and bomb-making, published by associates of the Al-Qaeda.

The photo is included in the latest issue of 'Inspire' published by Al-Qaeda associates in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The image, believed to be at least seven years old, occupies a whole page and is the introduction to the magazine's regular bomb-making section, "Open Source Jihad".

Until this issue, the section had used images only of US cities, specifically New York, Washington and Chicago.

In the pages following the image, the magazine includes information on correct firing positions when using military guns, as well as detailed instructions on how to make a particular explosive from over-the-counter ingredients.

Inspire's sixth issue, published online on Tuesday, has startled Australia's most senior counter-terrorism officials.

One of Australia's leading public Al-Qaeda experts, a former federal police terrorism analyst, Leah Farrall, said while the image was worrying, it was unclear whether it was meant to encourage a terrorist attack.

"In the end, all we know is that a photograph of one of our most prominent landmarks has turned up on a page about bomb-making in a magazine that is encouraging people to take action on their own and blow things up in Western countries," she said.

The Attorney-General, Robert McClelland said that the material is intended to provoke a strong emotive reaction, and the government is taking the steps available to it to reduce the dissemination of this material given its intent to incite violence. (ANI)
