Cairo, July 19 (ANI): Egypt's Antiquities Minister, Zahi Hawass, has been sacked from office after accusations that he was maintaining close proximity with the ousted Hosni Mubarak regime.
Hawass, the public face of the pyramids and known for his 'Indiana Jones' style, has become the latest casualty of the revolution sweeping the Egyptian government, the Telegraph reports.
"He was the Mubarak of antiquities," Nora Shalaby, an activist and archaeologist was quoted, as saying. "He acted as if he owned Egypt's antiquities, and not that they belonged to the people of Egypt."
Minutes after Hawass was ousted, social networks such as Twitter and Facebook were flooded with jokes about the minister. Some jokes said "the Curse of the Mummy" has hit the minister.
The Prime Minister, Essam Sharaf, this weekend bowed to renewed protests by young activists who claim that the interim Supreme
Military Council, which is overseeing the country until new elections, is keeping too much power to itself. Mr Sharaf removed half his cabinet, including Hawass. (ANI)
