Lahore, July 19(ANI): A former Pakistan federal minister has expressed grief and condemnation after the Sikh community in Lahore was prevented from performing their religious celebrations by the Lahore police and Evacuee Trust Property Board officials.
According to the Daily Times, the officials took the action after the followers of Islamic organization Dawat-e-Islami demanded that the Sikh community must be stopped from conducting their religious ceremonies before the Muslim holy day of Shab-e-Barat, which was observed on Sunday.
Former Human Rights, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Iqbal Haider said that it was the constitutional and moral obligation of the federal and provincial administration and the police to provide due protection to all non-Muslims to enable them to perform their rituals.
According to him, such acts by the administration and religious extremists defame Islam, Muslims and Pakistan.
Haider has also appealed to all religious parties and Muslim scholars in the country to condemn the act. (ANI)
