Beijing, July 18 (ANI): China is planning to ease its 'one child' policy in some provinces over concerns about country's ageing population.
The one-child policy has been in effect for 30 years.
"The increase in population is still a big problem affecting our social and economic development. But, in the long-term, ageing will also be a problem," Zhang Feng, the head of Guangdong provive's population commission, told the Southern Metropolis News.
"I believe the government can relax the policy through pilot projects in certain provinces and cities," he added.
Guangdong province in South China is now waiting for approval from the president to become the first region in the country where the family-planning policy will be relaxed.
China currently has a population of 1.34 billion. Government controls on family size over the last three decades have brought the annual population growth rate down to less than a per cent.
Critics of the one-child policy say that the 'one child policy' is unnecessarily draconian, and that China's population growth was already beginning to dip when the policy was introduced in 1980, The Daily Mail reports.
"I don't know whether the government will give the green light to Guangdong or not, or when Guangdong's application will be approved, but the province now has room to relax the one-child policy" Zhang said. (ANI)
