London, July 15 (ANI): Britain was hit by three burglaries every two minutes last year as the number of break-ins soared. That works out to a burglary every 40 seconds
There were 745,000 break-ins last year, up 94,000 in 12 months, The Sun reports.
The 14 per cent rise took the number of burglaries to their highest level in seven years. The hike is believed to be fuelled by the recession and a rise in unemployment.
The British Crime Survey also revealed there were 2.2million violent crimes last year, a six per cent climb. This included a dramatic 38 per cent hike in assaults with "minor injury" and a 35 per cent increase in domestic violence.
There were also ten per cent more thefts. Association of Chief Police Officers head of crime Jon Murphy said rocketing metal prices drove a 70 per cent upsurge in cable thefts on the railways.
The survey estimated there were 9.6million crimes last year, up from 9.5million the year before. (ANI)
